Democratizing Complex Public Geospatial Intelligence

Public sector bodies and national statistics departments generate vast volumes of crucial information regarding local economies, educational attainment, social deprivation, and council solvency. Historically, these data assets remained siloed inside multi-megabyte CSV downloads or enterprise desktop software. Makecade Map Portal re-engineers this data into modern, responsive visualizers rendered seamlessly across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

Data Methodologies & Analytical Frameworks

1. English Indices of Deprivation 2025 (IoD2025)

The English Indices of Deprivation are produced by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). England is partitioned into 33,755 Lower-layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs) with an average population of 1,500. The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) synthesizes 39 distinct indicators across seven domains:

  • Income Deprivation: Quantifies the proportion of the population experiencing income deprivation, including out-of-work welfare and low-income tax credit support.
  • Employment Deprivation: Measures individuals involuntarily excluded from the labor market due to unemployment, illness, or care obligations.
  • Education, Skills and Training: Assesses primary and secondary educational attainment alongside adult qualification deficits.
  • Health Deprivation and Disability: Measures risk of premature mortality and impairment of physical and mental health.
  • Crime: Evaluates the incidence of violent crime, burglaries, vehicle theft, and criminal damage.
  • Barriers to Housing and Services: Measures geographical accessibility to primary local services and local housing affordability ratios.
  • Living Environment: Evaluates indoor housing condition metrics and outdoor air quality indicators.

Our visualizer categorizes all 33,755 areas into ten national deciles. Decile 1 corresponds to the most deprived 10% of areas nationally (rendered in deep navy blue), while Decile 10 corresponds to the least deprived 10% (rendered in crimson red).

2. UK Schools, Catchment Boundaries & 2026 Ofsted Inspection Framework

Evaluating primary and secondary school accessibility requires cross-referencing establishment data published by the Department for Education (DfE) with inspection ratings issued by Ofsted. Our platform models spatial distance catchment buffers based on historical admission criteria and census boundary density.

Each establishment is coded according to its most recent inspection judgment: Outstanding (Grade 1), Good (Grade 2), Requires Improvement (Grade 3), or Inadequate (Grade 4). Users can search any English postcode to immediately pinpoint local schools, check phased levels (nursery, primary, secondary, 16-plus), and link directly to full statutory inspection reports.

3. CouncilWatch: Local Government Financial Resilience & Insolvency Risk (MIRS)

English local authorities face severe structural budgetary strains driven by escalating statutory commitments in Adult Social Care, Children's Services, and temporary accommodation for homeless households. Following high-profile Section 114 notices issued across multiple councils, CouncilWatch provides an independent spatial monitoring portal.

The Municipal Insolvency Risk Score (MIRS) evaluates unallocated reserves against Net Revenue Expenditure (NRE), external debt gearing, and statutory spending concentration. Authorities are classified across four risk tiers: Stable (MIRS < 40), Vulnerable (MIRS 40–59), Severe Risk (MIRS 60–79), and Critical Distress (MIRS 80+).

4. FindFrame: Celestial Ephemeris Raycasting & Topographic Sightline Planning

Capturing striking alignment photography β€” such as a supermoon rising precisely behind an iconic monument or a sun alignment through an architectural aperture β€” demands complex geodetic and celestial computation. FindFrame brings together NASA JPL DE421 ephemeris calculations with sub-arcminute celestial precision, 3D building horizons, and real-world digital elevation models.

By combining reverse raycasting with live OpenSky ADS-B flight feeds, photographers and cinematographers can identify the exact camera coordinates, required focal lengths, and capture timestamps down to the second, including predicting aircraft transits across lunar and solar discs.

Engineering Architecture: Serverless Cloud GIS with PMTiles & WebGL

Traditional web mapping workflows rely on server clusters running raster tile renderers that generate image tiles on demand. This architecture suffers from slow cold-starts, high cloud server costs, and poor responsiveness under peak traffic.

Makecade adopts the modern PMTiles v3 open format. Entire national spatial vector layers are stored as single self-contained archives on cloud object storage. Using HTTP Range Requests, web clients selectively download only the tile bytes needed for their current viewport. MapLibre GL JS renders these geometries on the client GPU via WebGL shaders, achieving fluid 60 FPS panning, instantaneous polygon filtering, and dynamic styling without server load.
